Avalanche vs snowball: how to pay off credit cardsAvalancha vs bola de nieve: cómo pagar tus tarjetas

If you have more than one credit card balance, the order in which you pay them off matters. There are two classic methods, and both start the same way: pay at least the minimum on every card, then put every extra dollar on one target card.

Avalanche: highest interest rate first

Rank your cards by interest rate and attack the highest rate first. When it is gone, move its payment to the next one. This costs the least interest and is mathematically the cheapest way out.

Snowball: smallest balance first

Rank by balance instead. You clear small cards quickly, which feels good and frees up their minimum payment sooner. It usually costs a little more interest, but many people stick with it longer because they see progress fast.

A worked example

CardBalanceRateMinimum
A$80019.99%$25
B$4,50024.99%$90
C$2,20022.99%$50

With an extra $200 a month, avalanche targets card B first (24.99%), then C, then A. Snowball targets card A first ($800), then C, then B. Avalanche saves more interest overall; snowball wins the first milestone in about four months.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the method you will actually follow. If the rate gap between your cards is large, avalanche saves real money. If you have lost motivation before, snowball's quick wins can be worth the extra interest. You can also start with snowball for one or two quick wins, then switch to avalanche.

Three habits that matter more than the method

Pay on time so you never trigger penalty rates or late fees. Stop adding new balance while you pay down old balance. And check each statement: the minimum payment is mostly interest, so paying only the minimum can keep you in debt for years.

A$80019.99 %$25
B$4,50024.99 %$90
C$2,20022.99 %$50
