TFSA, RRSP and FHSA limits for 2026

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answerFor 2026 the TFSA limit is $7,000, the RRSP dollar limit is $33,810 (your own limit is 18% of last year's earned income up to that cap) and the FHSA gives $8,000 of new room a year, up to $40,000 for life. Your personal room can be higher or lower: check your CRA My Account for RRSP and FHSA, and your own records for the TFSA.

Three registered accounts, three different ways of counting your room. This page puts the 2026 numbers side by side, explains where your personal limit comes from and lists the dates that matter.

TFSA: $7,000 again in 2026

The TFSA dollar limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, so it only changes now and then. It was $7,000 in 2024 and 2025, and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) lists $7,000 again for 2026.

Your room is the 2026 limit, plus any unused room from earlier years, plus what you withdrew last year. Someone who has been 18 or older and a Canadian resident every year since 2009 has up to $109,000 of total room in 2026. If you became a resident or turned 18 later, count only from that year. Money you withdraw comes back as room on January 1 of the next year, not in the same year.

RRSP: $33,810 is a ceiling, not your number

The $33,810 is the CRA's dollar limit for 2026. Your own new room is 18% of your previous year's earned income, up to that cap, minus any pension adjustment from a workplace pension, plus any unused room from earlier years.

2025 earned incomeNew RRSP room for 2026 (18%)
$45,000$8,100
$60,000$10,800
$100,000$18,000
About $187,800 or more$33,810 (the cap)

Looking ahead, the CRA already lists the RRSP dollar limit for 2027 as $35,390. If you are 18 or older, you can go over your room by up to $2,000 without penalty, but that amount is not deductible, and anything above the buffer is taxed at 1% per month.

FHSA: $8,000 a year, $40,000 for life

Your FHSA room starts only when you open your first FHSA, and it is $8,000 for that year. Each following year you get another $8,000. If you do not use it all, up to $8,000 carries forward, so the most you can have in a single year is $16,000. For example, if you open an FHSA in December 2026 and contribute nothing, your room in 2027 is $16,000.

The $8,000 and $40,000 are set in law and are not indexed to inflation. Having several FHSAs does not give you extra room: the limit applies to all of them together.

Where to find your exact room

Sign in to your CRA My Account. It shows your RRSP deduction limit and your FHSA participation room. Your latest Notice of Assessment also shows your RRSP deduction limit.

TFSA room needs extra care. The CRA says the TFSA information in My Account is updated once a year, in the spring, and may be incomplete, so use your own financial records to work out how much you can still contribute. Your bank app only knows what you put in with that institution, so add up deposits and withdrawals across every TFSA you have had. The CRA's own page explains how to calculate your room.

Dates to remember

DateWhat it means
December 31, 2026Last day to make a TFSA or FHSA contribution for 2026
March 1, 2027Last day to make an RRSP contribution you can deduct for the 2026 tax year (the first 60 days of 2027)
April 30, 2027Deadline to file your 2026 tax return, where you claim your RRSP and FHSA deductions

For comparison, the RRSP deadline for the 2025 tax year was March 2, 2026. The CRA publishes the official dates each year, so confirm them before you rely on them.

If you are new to Canada

TFSA room starts to build from the year you become a Canadian resident and are at least 18. RRSP room is built from Canadian earned income reported on your tax return, so in your first year you usually have little or none. For the FHSA you must be a resident, 18 or older (19 in provinces where that is the age of majority) and a first-time buyer, and your room starts when you open the account, so opening one when you are ready makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TFSA limit for 2026?

$7,000. It is the same as in 2024 and 2025. If you have been eligible since 2009 and never contributed, your total room in 2026 is $109,000.

What is the maximum RRSP contribution for 2026?

The RRSP dollar limit is $33,810, but most people have less. Your new room is 18% of your previous year's earned income, so you would need about $187,800 of earned income in 2025 to reach the cap. Unused room from earlier years is added, and a workplace pension reduces it.

Can I contribute to a TFSA, an RRSP and an FHSA in the same year?

Yes. Each account has its own room, so using one does not use up the others.

What happens if I contribute too much?

TFSA: a tax of 1% per month on the excess. RRSP: a $2,000 buffer if you are 18 or older, then 1% per month on the excess above it. FHSA: the excess can be taxed, generally 1% per month, and it reduces your room the following year.

Do these limits change every year?

The TFSA and RRSP dollar limits are indexed to inflation and published by the CRA each year (the RRSP rises most years, the TFSA only in $500 steps). The FHSA amounts of $8,000 a year and $40,000 for life are fixed in law.
